Presentation on theme: "11.1 Distance and Displacement"— Presentation transcript:

1 11.1 Distance and Displacement
Frame of reference: object used to describe motion Relative motion: movement in relation to frame of reference Measuring Distance: length of path between 2 points Measuring Displacement: direction (using straight line) from starting to ending point

2 Displacement Straight path Not straight path
Same direction add magnitudes Opposite direction subtract magnitudes Not straight path Resultant vector (if multiple directions) gives vector sum, like a graph

3 11.2 Speed and Velocity Speed (v)= distance (d) / time (t)
Avg: duration of trip Instantaneous: particular instant Graphing Motion Slope of the line= speed

4 Velocity Combining velocities Both speed and direction It’s a vector
Add together like vector addition

5 11.3 Acceleration Acceleration: change in speed, direction, or both
Changes in Speed Speeding up and slowing down are acceleration Freefall: move of object towards earth because of gravity (9.8m/s2) Changes in Direction Speed can be constant but change in direction Ex rides that spin Changes in Speed and Direction Ex roller coaster

6 Constant acceleration: steady change in velocity, ex: jet
Calculating Acceleration: Change in velocity/ total time; a= (vf – vi) / t Speed-Time Graphs: linear Distance-Time Graphs: nonlinear Instantaneous Acceleration: how fast velocity is changing at specific acceleration
