Mecca was a trading city but also a religious center due to the fact that the Kaaba resides in Mecca.

The angel Gabriel appeared before him and told him to spread God’s word.

Many Arabs were hostile to Muhammad’s message. They began to persecute Muhammad and his followers. In 622, Muhammad and his followers fled Mecca for the town of Medina, about 275 miles to the north. Muslims remember the flight to Medina as the hijra. (hidge-ruh)
