6 Migration after Independence
Migration of former colonial subjects to imperial metropoles maintained cultural & economic ties between the colony and the metropole even after the dissolution of empires. Examples: Algerians to France, Filipinos to US & South Asians to Britain Why did they move?

8 Reasons for South Asians in Britain
1. Manuel laborers were recruited to fulfill labor shortages after WWII. 2. Workers arrived in late 50’s early 60’s to work in the manufacturing and service sector Remember the move towards white collar jobs after WWII?? Someone still has to fill in the gaps of blue collar or manual labor

9 3. The Commonwealth Immigrants Act – 1962
Changed the character of the migration By 1970, 3/4th = women & children 4. 60s and 70s - large numbers of East African Asians, who already held British passports, entered the UK after they were expelled from newly independent African Countries
