1 Lesson 1.4 Working With Exponents
Unit 1 Lesson 1.4 Working With Exponents

2 Product of Powers To multiply powers when the bases are the same, add the exponents. an • am = an+m Example, 54 • 53 =57

3 Quotient of Powers To divide powers when the bases are the same, subtract the exponents. an ÷ am = an-m Example, 54 ÷ 53 = 51 = 5

4 Power of a Power To evaluate a power of a power, multiply the exponents. ( x a)b = x ab Example, (23)2 = (23) (23) = 23 x 2 = 26 = 64

5 Power of a Product To evaluate a power of a product, every part of the product should be raised to the exponent. ( xy )m = (xm ) (ym) Example, ( 4xy )3 = 43x3y3 = 64x3y3

6 Power of a Quotient To evaluate the power of a quotient, raise the numerator and the denominator to the exponent. Example:

7 You try these using our rules…
( 12x3)2 24 ÷ 23 54 • 53
