1 Unit 1: Combining like Terms
Welcome Back Unit 1: Combining like Terms

2 First 10

3 Notebook set up First page label: Unit 1 Algebraic expressions and Equations Place tab in the upper right hand corner Cut out 2 graphic organizer Place the vocab organizer on second page Place Classification on the back of the second page

4 Notes Time Vocabulary Expression Example
Any mathematical calculation or formula combining numbers and/or variables Expressions may not contain the equal sign (=) or any type of inequality Example 5x + 3 2y + 7x 4

5 Vocabulary Variable Example
A quantity that can change or that may take on different values. Variable also refers to a letter or symbol representing such a quantity. Example X, y, z, t, . . .

6 Vocabulary Constant Example a term or expression with no variables
2, 6, 12, 311, . . .

7 Vocabulary Exponent Example
The number or letter that is in the upper right corner of another term. How many times a number is multiplied. Example x in the expression ax

8 Vocabulary Coefficient Example
The number multiplied times a product of variables or powers of variables in a term. Example 123 is the coefficient in the term 123x3y

9 Vocabulary Like term Example
Terms which have the same variables and corresponding powers and/or roots. Like terms can be combined using addition and subtraction. Terms that are not like cannot be combined using addition or subtraction. Example 2x and 3x are like terms 5x2y and 8x2y are like terms. 5x2y + 8x2y simplifies to 13x2y 5x2y – 8x2y simplifies to –3x2y

10 Practice

11 Now move to the back Classification
Terms Degree How many different letters/ number Highest exponent

12 Classification Monomial Binomial Trinomial One term polynomial Example
5x or 4 Binomial Two term Polynomial 2x – 1 or 3x + 7y Trinomial Three term polynomial 2x2 – 3x + 2 or x + y – z

13 Classification Linear Quadratic Cubic
A polynomial with a degree of 1( highest exponent 1) Example 5x or 4y Quadratic A polynomial with a degree of 2( highest exponent 2) 2x2 – 3x + 2 Cubic A polynomial with a degree of 3( highest exponent 3) x3 – 9x + 10
