Setting: Green Town, Illinois October 24th, “a rare month for boys” Characters: William Halloway – “blonde-white as milk thistle, eyes bright and clear as a drop of summer rain” = ???? (light) - Halloway – “hallow”= holy, honor, respect - birthday is Oct 30th *Actions??? – interaction with other characters /Charles,Jim,Fury Jim Nightshade – “wild, thick hair, color of waxed chestnuts; eyes mint rock-crystal green” = ???? (dark) - Nightshade – a poisonous plant; deadly juice - birthday is Oct 31st *Actions??? –interaction with other characters /Charles,Will,Fury

Tom Fury – “storm-dark clothes”; “cloud-colored hat” lightning rod salesman (lightening rods protects and attracts) Fury= choas and disorder (storm) Storm=Carnival *lightning rod protects/attracts what…? “…sun vanished,…the air blew gray…” –the rest of the action takes place against a background of DUSK or DARKNESS Charles Halloway –Will’s father, the old man with “moon white hair”; ”winter apple face”; Will-”like me in a smashed mirror” **Tragic flaw – leads to the characters doom / Charles longs for his youth *Gives info about the boys and insight into their relationship/hats and comparison Mr. Crosetti and Mr. Tetley – townspeople that are susceptible to temptation

Background: storm is coming / what does the storm represent? Jim will be targeted by the lightning/susceptible to the carnival Friendship between the boys? Father/son relationship is strained. How do you know? Jim – sees what is coming, not trusting, is looking ahead to something, black hats Will – naïve, young, trusting, good, white hats
