1
MAGNETISM & ELECTRICITY
2
Magnetism The attraction of one magnet to another
3
Magnetic Pole The area around the magnet where the magnetic effect is strongest Like poles repel South ,South North ,North Unlike poles attract South ,North
4
Magnetic Field The region of magnetic force around a magnet.
this allows magnets to interact without touching
5
Iron bearing metals Materials that shows strong magnetic effects Iron
Nickel cobalt
6
What is Static Electricity ?
The build up of charge on an object These charges do not flow Rubbing certain materials together is a build up of static electricity. Lightning is static electricity.
7
Benjamin Franklin Discovered lightning was an electric current and built the first lightning rod.
8
Electric Current Current: flow of electrons through a material
9
Circuits A pathway taken by an electric current.
Closed circuits: allow the movement of electrical energy Open circuits: stop the movement of electrical energy.
10
Circuits Series Circuit: only one path for current to flow through
Parallel Circuit: more than one path for current to flow through
11
How does electricity move?
Conductors: allow electricity to move through them (metals) Insulators: do not allow electricity to move through them (rubber, plastic, wood)
12
Electromagnet Current flowing through a wired that’s been wrapped around an iron-bearing metal. This is a temporary magnet.
13
Michael Faraday Discovered that an electric motor could be made using electricity and magnetism.
