They ask you to apply your knowledge and understanding in a short written answer.
Difference between a constructed response and short answer:
A constructed response will always ask for evidence to analyze with the question.

A- answer
C- cite evidence
E- explain how the evidence connects to your answer

3. R.A.C.E. Example: Question - "Why do we study history?”
Reword: restate the question and make it into a statement as a part of the answer you provide.
Example:
Question - "Why do we study history?”
Correct written answer - “We study history because” or words to that effect.

4. “Why do we study history?”
R.A.C.E.
ANSWER: show how you arrived at your answer with general reasons. Usually R & A in R.A.C.E. are in the same sentence.
Example:
“Why do we study history?”
REWORD: We study history because…
ANSWER: history shows us where we come from and where we are headed in the future.

Cite Evidence/Examples: Use the facts, evidence or examples to support the R & A in R.A.C.E

EXAMPLE:
We study history because history shows us where we come from and where we are headed in the future. During his annual message to Congress on December 1, 1862 Abraham Lincoln said, “We cannot escape history.” History is the story of our past, and without it we would have no identity. History shapes who we are as individuals, a nation, and a world. It forms our national identity. Events like the American Revolution tells us the story of our countries patriotic past, and forges our voice as a people constantly striving toward equality. It also provides a blueprint for our future. By study the patterns of past events we can see those patterns emerging in the here and now, and act to prevent our past mistakes from repeating. Like Lincoln said, our history is a part of us and cannot be forgotten or escaped.
