Unit One Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life. The biosphere includes all living things and all the places they are found.
7
Unit One What is biodiversity? Biodiversity is the variety of life.
Biodiversity generally increases from the poles to the equator. Why? Where is Costa Rica? Biodiversity is greater in areas with consistently warm temperatures. Biodiversity is greater closer to the equator.

Unit One A species is one particular type of living thing. Give one example of a species. Members of a species can interbreed to reproduce. OLD definition – changed to “an independently evolving lineage” Things are continuing to change as we learn more! There are about 2 million different living species have been identified.

All organisms share certain characteristics.
Unit One All organisms share certain characteristics. Biology is the scientific study of all forms of life. **Those watching by recording, include in your the definition of Biology.
10
Unit One IT’S ALIVE!!! Or is it? How do you know something is alive?
What are the characteristics that show you for certain something is alive? Or that it’s not alive? Sounds like a ZOMBIE INVASION!!
11
Unit One IT’S ALIVE!!! Or is it?
You are headed for the breakout rooms to design a zombie. Like all good zombies, yours will have some characteristics of living things and some characteristics that show it is definitely not alive. As a group, decide on two characteristics that your zombie has that ALL living things have and one characteristic that shows it is not alive. Draw your zombie and choose one person who will report for your group.
12
Unit One IT’S ALIVE!!! Or is it?
You have ten minutes to finish your work, then I’ll bring everyone back into the main room to report.
13
Unit One An organism is any individual living thing.
All are made of one or more cells. Bone marrow cells
14
Unit One An organism is any individual living thing.
All are made of one or more cells. All need energy for metabolism. All can reproduce. All maintain homeostasis. All have DNA that they pass on to offspring. All adapt and evolve. All are interdependent. **Those watching by recording, include in your the descriptions of a living organism.

Unit One Time to Disgust Oops… I mean DISCUSS!
16
Unit One Discussions Your first discussion is on the characteristics of life. Discussions are one place I will be VERY strict about the due dates because… Discussions are conversations – just like it would make no sense for you to walk into an empty room and shout out some random information, it makes no sense to post in a discussion that is no longer being read. Watch the course schedule and the descriptions in the forums for due dates and be sure to post early!

How can you ACE the discussions?
Unit One How can you ACE the discussions? Here are the instructions for your first discussion: In our Class Connect, your group designed a zombie. For your post (worth 10 points), choose ONE of the following: Zombies Werewolves Vampires Mummies Using at least 100 words, and in complete sentences, use the information covered in the text on what characteristics something must have to be considered alive and explain why your choice is alive (10 points). THEN, go and read two other people's posts and reply to them explaining at least one characteristic from the text that shows that their choice is NOT alive. (Each reply worth 5 points)
24
Unit One EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY - Defend your monster! Partner with someone else in the discussion who replied to your post and argue it out - prove to them that your monster IS alive according to the scientific definition and go to their post and argue that their monster is NOT alive. To earn the extra credit, you will need to make at least two more replies and do your best to convince me of your point of view. The one of you who is most convincing will earn 5 extra credit points and the other person will earn 4 extra credit points. Save the monsters!! REMEMBER to use grammar and spell check before you post!
