Chemical Reactions
2
Chemical Reaction- a well- defined example of a chemical change
Chemical Reaction- a well- defined example of a chemical change. One or more substances are changed into new substances.
3
What makes up a chemical reaction?
Reactants- substances you start with 2. Products- substances you end with Reactants → Products
4
Balanced chemical equation- same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.
Remember atoms are rearranged but never lost or destroyed.
5
Writing a balanced chemical equation
Reactant on left side and products on the right side. Check for atom balance Choose coefficients that balance the equation.
6
Coefficients- numbers that represent the number of units of each substance taking part in a reaction.
7
Ex: Reactants Products _LiF + _Br2 → _LiBr +_ F2
8
Reactants Products 2LiF + _Br2 → _LiBr +_ F2
9
Reactants Products 2LiF + _Br2 → 2LiBr +_ F2
10
_Mg + _O2 → _MgO _AgNO3 + _NaCl → _AgCl + _NaNO3 _MgCl2 + _Na2CO3 → _MgCO3 + _NaCl
11
4. _NaBr + _Cl2→_NaCl +_Br2 5. _Cu + _S → _Cu2S 6. _Al(OH)3 + _CO2 → _Al(HCO3)3
12
7. _Na + _H2O → _NaOH + _H2
