By 1918 German troops Started to use field guns And armour piercing bullets to Fire at the tanks. Chlorine and Phosgene gas Caused suffocation. Mustard Gas ate away the soldiers lungs. Artillery moved forward in stages whilst troops Advanced; but could accidentally kill their own troops. They Could fire bullets a minute meaning any attack across No-mans land would be expensive. Guns could fire Shells from a distance Of 13 KM away. Germans had 100,000 machine Guns by 1918 Only by 1917 at Cambrai were tanks Successful- however They blasted through Enemy lines too quickly. The flamethrower was difficult to operate and could only be safely fired from a trench which were often too far apart from each other. The fuel would also only last for about 2 minutes.[ Gas masks were created to limit the impact making gas attacks ineffective. As a result only 3,000 British soldiers died Of gas during the war. Gas was used as a tool of fear for Soldiers used to artillery attacks. In 1915 to reduce the power Of enemy machine guns the Germans launched gas shelves Into French trenches killing hundreds Of French troops before their attack Tanks moved at a walking pace and more Than half broke down before they reached the German Trenches.
