Before talking about getting into a course, I first want to point out a view
things here. You have entered the IOIVU. Remember that you are not yet in a course.
6
So let’s summarize quickly.
7
Let’s enter the IOIVU ICAM course. It is listed as Coastal Area
Management on the dropdown menu list.
8
Welcome to the IOIVU ICAM course, “An Introduction to Integrated
(Should you go back to the lobby), your “Connection Information” in the IOIVU Lobby will show that you are in the ICAM course. The small icon allows you to exit the course from the lobby. Welcome to the IOIVU ICAM course, “An Introduction to Integrated Coastal Area Management”.
9
At the bottom of the “Welcome” screen you will see the KEWL toolbar.
The toolbar will allow you to navigate through the course and to access tools and functions associated with the course.
10
The first button takes you to the first page.
The last button on the toolbar takes you to the next page. Click the button. Let’s start with the navigation buttons.
11
You are now on page 2 (Chapter 1) of the course.
It lists the seven (7) chapters within the course.
12
I will now focus on the new button, called ”backward navigation” and its
opposite, called ”forward navigation”.
13
Similarly, when you click on “forward navigation”, you can navigate
forward in a non-linear fashion through the course. A dropdown menu appears, which allows you to navigate backwards in a non-linear fashion through the course. You can do this by clicking to access specific pages, chapters or bookmarked pages. Click on “backward navigation”.
14
Let’s now look at the buttons which give you access to the tools and
functionality within the IOIVU/KEWL.
15
You can view notices posted by the course lecturer by clicking the Notice
Board button.
16
You can check mail (archived) and send a personal mail using this button.
17
The Course Documents button gives you access to course documents.
You can also request documents to be added to the list as the course proceeds.
18
The Discussion Forum allows you to view and post messages/questions for
other participants to the course. The discussion forum will also be used to post course notices.
19
The Realtime Chat consists of a conventional text chatroom, a
Whiteboard, and the Kewl Instant Messenger (previously mentioned). Note: Slow network speeds make it difficult to use these tools.
20
The Learner’s Lounge, with My personal space where you can edit your
course settings. Also a Jokebook, Study skills, a writing centre, access the hottub/chatroom.
21
Bookmark current course page. This inserts a single bookmark for you.
In this case it will be page 2 of 194 pages (Chapter 1).
22
You can also add your own notes for a particular page in the course.
23
The above popups shows annotation before and after a note has been
added for page 2. After adding notes to pages, you can view these notes. You will see one of two windows pop up, namely, one showing the annotation (if you have successfully added a note) or one showing no current notes.
24
That concludes the orientation for the ICAM course.
Enjoy the rest of the course! Faghrie Mitchell
