2 History Developed in Denmark The game was first created early 1900’s
Started out as an outdoor sport, with 11 players on a side Olympic games in Berlin 1936 (males) 1976 first women’s handball in the Olympic Games

3 Object of the Game Handball combines the elements of soccer & basketball Team consist of 7 players: 6 on the court & 1 goalie Score by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper into a net 30 minutes halves – 1 timeout per half A coin toss determines the start of the game Clock stops only: timeouts, injuries, referee’s discretion

4 Field of Play: Field of Play 20m X 40 M Net is 2m X 3m
Goal Area or the 6m line (NO ONE except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area) 7m Line: where penalty throws are taken 9m Line: called the free-throw line (most shots are taken from this line from a penalty)

5 The Ball An official ball : 32 panel leather ball

6 The Game: Players are allowed 3 steps before and 3 steps after dribbling the ball Players can dribble the ball for an unlimited amount of time (dribbling slows down the game) Double dribble is a violation Players can hold the ball for only 3 seconds before passing, dribbling, or shooting or it is a violation Only the goalie is allowed to contact the ball with the foot.

7 Players are not allowed to:
Rules and Violations Players are not allowed to: Endanger an opponent with the ball Pull, hit, or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent Violations: 3 seconds, double dribble, traveling Progressive Punishments: Actions consist of reaching around, holding, pushing, hitting, tripping, or jumping into opponent. Yellow card - 2 min. suspension Red card - Disqualification

8 Types of Passes: Team handball is a PASSING GAME - Chest - Bounce
- Overhead - Baseball - Sidearm - Shovel - Handoff - Roller - Jump - Behind the back

9 When to take a Penalty Shot:
Free-throw (9m Line) penalty shot: Minor foul or violation Shot is taken at the exact spot it took place Opponent must be 3m away from the ball 7m penalty shot: All major fouls (all clear chance to score) The goalie carries the ball back into the goalie area A court player intentionally passes the ball to his/her own goalie
