1 Greenhouse Effect By: Jenna Rano

2 Greenhouse Effect The Earth received energy from the Sun and some is reflected off the Earth and re-radiates some of the energy as longer wavelength infrared radiation that is absorbed by molecules in the lower atmosphere Sun’s energy gets trapped Ultraviolet radiation comes into the Earth’s atmosphere in short wavelengths Infrared radiation re-radiates back in long wavelengths

3 By trapping the radiation of the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere, it heats up the earth by the molecules absorbing the energy

4 Water vapor acts as a greenhouse gas Natural source of water vapor: Carbon Dioxide Man-Made: Chlorofluorocarbons Chlorofluorocarbons: refrigerants, aerosol propellants and cleaning solvents Destroy stratospheric ozone Raise temperature

5 Carbon Dioxide and Methane as a Greenhouse Gas
Carbon considered more important: more common, larger amounts than methane, we are burning fossil fuels giving off more carbon dioxide, contributes 50% to global warming Methane considered more important: 30 molecules of C02=1 molecule of methane If higher levels of CO2: rise of 2 degrees in Celsius, and CO2 will double in 100 years

6 Effects of global warming on the Earth
Dramatically increases the average temperature of the world Increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere Changes in agriculture and biodistribution as the climate changes Rising sea levels cause the polar ice caps and glaciers to melt

7 High levels of CO2 If higher levels of CO2: rise of 2 degrees in Celsius, and CO2 will double in 100 years Combining CO2 with the infrared radiation and thermal radiation it causes more radiation to be re-radiated back to the Earth causing the molecules to give off kinetic energy causing heating to increase

8 Greenhouse Effect  Rising Sea Levels
Greenhouse effect can make sea levels rise when the radiation gets re-radiated to the Earth. It absorbs the rays and heats up the Earth causing the melting of the polar ice caps which leads to higher sea levels Climate change leads to different biome distribution  changing rainfall patterns  flooding  increase in sea levels

9 Greenhouse gases molecularly
Greenhouse gases absorb the radiation when the infrared radiation strikes a molecule and causes the bonds to bend and vibrate (absorbing the IR). The molecule gains kinetic energy by the absorption of the IR radiation. The extra kinetic energy can be sent to other molecules causing a general heating.

10 Enhance greenhouse effect
With more burning fossil fuels (CO2), humans help increase the natural effect because greenhouse gases are absorbing the CO2 and re-radiating it back to Earth

11 Moral of the slide show:
THE END IS NEAR…..

12 No way… they really did end already.
