3 3. Geographic and Historical Notes
Wayne County is located in East Central Indiana and is bordered by the State of Ohio and the following Indiana counties: Randolph to the north, Henry to the west/northwest, Fayette to the south/southwest, and Union to the south. State Highways 27 and 40 and Interstate Highway 70 cross the county. Elevation is 900 to 1,257 feet. The landscape of the county is mostly slightly sloping, but with steeper areas in the farthest southern areas, and nearly flat regions in the north and southeast. The landscape features hickory and oak trees. The county pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area. Wayne county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 16٥/35٥ in January and 61٥/85٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 39 and snowfall about inches. The first freeze occurs between October 5-10 everywhere except the northeastern corner where it is a bit later, October The last freeze occurs between May The growing season lasts days. Agricultural activity is diversified. Main crops are corn for grain, winter wheat, hay, and soybeans. Sweet corn is an important vegetable. Livestock include cattle/calves, milk cows, and hogs/pigs. Nearly three-quarters of the land is in farms and about three-fourths of that land is in cash crops. Important natural resources include construction sand and gravel, crushed stone, and forestland. Water resources include lakes/reservoirs (including Middle Fork Reservoir, Newman Lakes, Spring Grove lake, We-Hi-Lakes), the Whitewater and East Fork Whitewater Rivers, and streams (Greens Fork, Nolands, and Martindale Creeks). Communities include the city of Richmond, which is the county seat; and the towns of Boston, Cambridge City, Centerville, Dublin, East Germantown, Economy, Fountain City, Greens Fork, Fountain City, Hagerstown, Milton, Mount Auburn, Spring Grove, and Whitewater.
