The Affordable Care Act
Passed in 2010; also known as Obamacare Original intention: lower healthcare costs, provide EVERYONE with health insurance Positives: More people have health insurance Negatives: Forces everyone to have insurance either through Obamacare or private insurance (if not, you pay a penalty fee) Problems with the Obamacare website/customer service Many private practice doctors going out of business May have to wait longer for procedures. Insurance Terminology
Deductible - the amount of expenses that must be paid out of pocket before an insurer will pay any expenses Co-insurance – the insured person agrees to pay a % of medical costs even after the deductible is met Example: 80%/20% plan Let’s say a surgery costs $2,000, but the deductible is already met. How much would the insurance company pay? How much would you have to pay? Co-payment – the insured person pays a small amount for medical visits/prescriptions each time, with the insurance company paying the rest. Copyright © 2004 by Thomsom Delmar Learning.
