Lithuania March 1990 Lithuania declares independence
Gorbachev orders blockade of country Jan 91’ Soviet troops kill 14 and wound 150 in Lithuania’s capital.

-Exodus In 1991 after Lithuania gets independence near by countries Estonia and Latvia will also claim independence. While Gorbachev pleaded for unity, over 10 republics will claim independence from former USSR

Gorbachev’s fall In 91’ Gorbachev was detained at his summer home.
Forced to resign by hardline “Stalin era” like leaders State Committee had tanks roll into Moscow, wanted obedience from the people, ordered the military to attack the people and parliament. Tried a military coup.

Gorbachev names him Moscow mayor in 1985 Is elected in June 1991 to be first elected president of Russia. He is like Gorbachev in his new, non-conservative politics

August coup When tanks enter Moscow, the State Committee, those hard-liners (conservatives who opposed reforms) wanted to take control from the new Parliament Ordered attack on Parliament, the military refused, and left Moscow Yeltsin went to a tank and gave a great speech to the Russian people, telling the committee to dissolve because they are illegally trying to take power.

End of Soviet Union Coup attempted sparked anger and with Gorbachev resigned as party leader, the parliament voted to stop all party activities. With the original revolution starting with a coup, that government will end with another, failed coup.

Yugoslavia Had been held together by their leader, Josip Tito, ethnic issues began to rise up. The country split apart after Tito’s death, falling into civil war. Ethnic cleansing took place against Muslims in Bosnia.

Chechnya Declared independence, Yeltsin denied its succession.
Invaded and destroyed the capital. Russians were unhappy with the destruction but reelected him anyway.

Putin When war with Chechnya broke out again in 1999 Yeltsin resigned.
Putin named temporary president. Squashed rebellion with force Became president in 2000
