Moods of the Verb First of all, what is a MOOD? mood = a way to express the attitude of the speaker to what is being said. There are five moods in English

Indicative Mood Makes a statement, stating facts
Used for many purposes Examples: Al needs to clean his room today. Joe plays outside. (The speaker thinks it's a fact.) It will rain soon. (The speaker thinks it's a fact.) She was studying all day long. (The speaker thinks it's a fact.)

Imperative Mood Used for commands or direct requests, expressing an order Used for dramatic effect or when trying to persuade Doesn’t have to end in an exclamation point Examples: Al. clean your room today! Go outside! (This is a command.) Close the door, please. (This is a request.) Don't move the object. (This is an instruction.)

Subjunctive Mood Use to express things that are not facts: wishes, possibilities, doubts, suggestions, conditions, etc Examples: Al wished he were finished cleaning his room. She insists he wash his hands before dinner. If I were the president, I would create more jobs.

Conditional Mood Expresses an action or idea that is dependent on a condition Expresses hypothetical situations Examples: If Al had cleaned his room, he could have played. If you ate fruit, you would be healthier. Lisa will be very happy if she wins the prize. If it rains, then we will stay at home.

Interrogative Mood Used to ask a question
Always ends in a question mark Example: Have you cleaned your room yet, Al?

Practice This is the largest carrot I have ever seen. Is she happy?
Bring me my camera. If that were my garden, I would never have to buy vegetables at the store. I wish I were taller.

Active and Passive Voice
A verb in the active voice expresses an action done by its subject. A verb in the passive voice expresses action done to its subject.

EXAMPLES I. M. Pei designed this building. [The subject, I. M. Pei, performs the action.] This building was designed by I. M. Pei. [The subject, building, receives the action.]

Practice Victor throws the ball across the field.
The ball is thrown by Nestor across the field. Mrs. Tucci makes delicious muffins. My mother made a very good soup. We threw the Frisbee all afternoon. The Frisbee was thrown all afternoon. Some delicious muffins were made by Mrs. Tucci. A very good soup was made by my mother.
