1 WIRELESS BROADBAND ACCESS “WBA”
ITU/BDT Arab Regional Workshop on Wireless Network Evolution Muscut Oman 3-5 May 2004 Tunisie Télécom WIRELESS BROADBAND ACCESS “WBA” SLAHEDDINE MAAREF TUNISIE TELECOM

2 SOMMARY Market Overview Definition Applications advantages
WBA Technologies Tunisie Telecom WBA Project Comparative Study for Broadband Access :

3 Market overview 1 Forcast on Bandwith Demand shows that all users need more and more bandwith According to the « sophisticated » multimidia applications they are using, residential subscribers are asking for high speed internet.

4 Market overview 2 Tariffs for broadband services are decreasing around the world. The boom of the broadband market is coming. Operators have to prepare infrastructure to face demands every where.

5 Market Overview 3 Operators today problem : Availability & Quality of Access Network xDSL technologies are not available and suitable every where Deployment of xDSL technologies depends on the quality and coverage of existing wired network

6 Definition 1 Wireless Broadband Access (WBA) is a new solution based on point to multipoint radio distribution to provide broadband access.

7 Definition 2 It comes as attractive and innovative alternative for conventional broadband connections based on traditional copper links.

8 Definition 3 Wireless Broadband Access (BWA) is used to provide broadband services to suburban and remote users (Voice, Data, High speed Internet).

9 Access Network

10 Wireless solution Internet Access Point Internet et voix simultanés
Net Data rate: jusqu‘à 2 Mbps 2000 utilisateurs par station de base Portée de 50 Kms Router Gateway IP Network IAP Local Exchange PSTN Internet Access Point

11 Wireless for telephony
High quality voice with MOS > 4 Fax G3 (14.4 Kbit/s) Modem V.90 (56 kbit/s) Bit error rate BER <= 10-4 Pay phones Supplementary services

12 And for Internet.... Débits allant à 512 Kbps
Bit error rate BER <= 10-6 Connection permanente Système transparent au dessus de la couche 2

13 Téléphony & Internet

18 Advantages of BWA BWA may be profitable compared to wired lines in areas with low density Wireless network deployment is progressive : Gradual deployement minimum market risks. Time to market is shorter than wired network .

19 Wireless Broadband Access Technologies
ITU/BDT Arab Regional Workshop on Wireless Network Evolution Muscut Oman 3-5 May 2004 Wireless Broadband Access Technologies

20 Wireless Broadband Access Technologies
LMDS technology LMDS solution (Local Multipoint Distribution Service). LMDS combines voice and data in order to offer a wide range of broadband communication services. LMDS system focuses first on Small and Medium Enterprises.

21 LMDS Specifications IEEE Standard : 802.16.1 Access type : OFDM
Frequency : GHZ GHZ Bit rate : from 5 Mb/s to 1.25 Gb/s (with dynamic allocation) Covering : km Services : voice, data ( Internet, LL, VPN, Frame Relay, Broadcast,...).

22 Wireless Broadband Access Technologies (Cd)
MMDS Technology Microwave Multipoint Distribution System (designed to serve small geographic area ). MMDS system focuses first on Small and Medium Enterprises.

23 MMDS Specifications IEEE Standard : 802.16.3 Access type : OFDM
Frequency : GHZ GHZ Bit rate : from 3 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s range : km (with non line-of-sight). Services : voice, data ( Internet, LL, VPN, Frame Relay, Broadcast,...).

24 Wireless Broadband Access Technologies (Cd) W_CDMA technology
Multi-services broadband access network with point-multipoint radio distribution using CDMA access techniques. W_CDMA to provide wireless connections up to 1 Mb/s.

25 W-CDMA specifications
Access type : CDMA Frequency band : GHZ GHZ Bit rate : until 512 kb/s Couvering : km (with non line-of-sight Services : voice, data ( Internet, LL, VPN, Frame- Relay, Broadcast,...).

26 Tunisia Telecom WBA Projet

27 Objective Network configuration Scope of Projet

28 Project Objective Built a WBA network to provide the following services : Internet high speed access (up to 512 Kb/s down link, up to 128 Kb/s up link). ISDN Accès (2B+D). Frame Relay Accès. LL Accès (64 Kb/s & 128 Kb/s). Voice sevices

29 Project Description Installation of : 3 base stations BSs 1 BSCs
1 Central Station 600 of Different types of Subscriber Terminal Equipement : 1 Line high speed Internet asymétric + 2 Telephone Lines 1 ISDN Line (2B+D). 1 LL 128 Kb/s or 2*64 Kb/s. 2 Téléphone lines

30 Project Description Areas to be covered by WBA : Zone South Hammamet North suburbs of Tunis South suburbs of Tunis (Ouardia)

31 Network Architecture

32 Contrôleur de station de base
Network Architecture Frame Relay IP LL Ethernet 100 Base T PSTN RNIS Interface V5.2 Station de base & Contrôleur de station de base Station Centrale Station de Gestion

33 Scope of Projet

34 Scope of projet 400 High speed Internet (128 to 512 Kb/s for down link & 32 to 128 Kb/s up link). 50 accès Frame Relay 64 & 128 Kbit/s 50 accès LL 64 & 128 Kbit/s 50 accès ISDN (2B+D) 50 téléphone lines

35 WBA < > Wired ADSL
COST COMPARAISON WBA < > Wired ADSL For suburban areas

36  Cost calculation of ADSL wired access
Assumption   we use 4 km + 2 km (primary + secondary) of undergrounded copper cable (0.6mm) to prvide ADSL access for 20 suburban subscribers. We use small capacity DSLAM & ADSL modem

37 Cost calculation of ADSL wired access (Cd)
Average cost of cable (6km) 2500 dinars Cost of ADSL terminal 100 dinars Cost of one DSLAM port Total 2700 Dinars The average cost per ADSL wired access = 2700 DT

38 Cost of a small WBA network (200 accèss)
Cost calculation of WBA_CDMA access Cost of a small WBA network (200 accèss) Dinars Average cost of one WBA 2500 Dinars

39 WBA < > Wired ADSL
COST COMPARAISON For suburban areas WBA < > Wired ADSL 2500 DT < > 2700 DT

40 Conclusion The optimal Broadband solution to connect suburban users depends on distanses (geographical distribution) and number of subscribers. The main advantages of WBA are time to market and easy re-use.
