2. Henrik Ibsen A playwright Henrik Gibson was born March 20, 1828.
He grew up in Skien, Norway.
At first he wanted to become an artist.
He started writing plays when he was
young and was influenced by Shakespeare.
His first play was in 1849.
-THE PLAY WAS CATILINA.
When he returned to Norway he was known as a literary hero.
He died on May 23, 1906 in Oslo Norway.

His work put Norway on the map.
His plays had a strong and active energy with artistic quality.
His plays were controversial and included issues in society people were too scared to discuss.

~ A satirical play about society and their views on marriage/love
~ Rejected by society
The Pillars of Society
~ A social drama
~ Performed in Munich in 1868
These two plays are examples of his strong opinions. The shows were presenting Ibsen’s idea in a tasteful and artistic way. Society still rejected his opinion though.

5. Henrik Ibsen -GHOSTS 1881- Ghosts
~ Controversial to the point that the play was taken off stage for two years
~ His next play called “An Enemy of the Public” reflected how society rejected him
1890- Hedda Gabler
~ Most notorious characters
~ Hedda, the character, became known as “the female Hamlet”
Ibsen wrote very controversial plays involving such things as blatant talk of sexual diseases, woman earning income, criticizing marital roles, and many more commenting on the norms of society. Such things were almost unheard of in his time and the introduction of his own ideals helped change the rules of drama and society itself. Ibsen’s writing methods, which were adopted by many others, is still seen today in the world of theatre.
