Decide if your verb takes etre or avoir.

Place your subject next to the form of etre or avoir that fits it
Je suis
Next, make monter into a past participle - monté

5. So our final product is je suis monté
Which means, I went up. At ONE point in time.

6. Now, let’s review the imperfect
Now, let’s review the imperfect. This tense means « used to » or « was in the process of »
We’re going to use monter again.
To form this tense, find the nous form
montons
Chop off the ons = mont
add on the ending for je - aid
je montais (I was going up)

7. What were those endings again?

nous - ions
vous - iez
ils - aient

8. The Only verb that does not follow this pattern is être.

10. Remember, make a verb imperfect if you want to express:

emotion
