Ethics The study of the rules, standards, and principles that dictate right conduct among members of a society An ethical individual is someone that respects everyone’s human, civil and legal rights.

Six underlying principles
Autonomy: a patient’s right to be fully informed, to make his or her own health care decisions, and to have his inherent dignity respected Beneficence: Commitment to do good, to try to do the best for each patient Nonmaleficence: Commitment to avoid doing bad things, to do no harm Fidelity: Subordination of one’s needs to those of the patient Veracity: Truth telling and honesty Justice: Concept that all patients should be treated fairly without regard to race, religion, and so on

Being a Professional Clinician – patient relationship (trust, confidence) Collegial relationships (with other health care professionals, including professional growth) Attire and hygiene (personal intangibles, such as punctuality, adhering to commitments, understanding role limitations)
