2 Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance and Extracorporeal Therapies
CHAPTER 33 Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance and Extracorporeal Therapies

3 Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance Section
The sixth section within ICD-10-PCS is the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section. The character 1 value for the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section is 5.

4 Character 2—Body System
The value of character 2, body system, has one value for the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section. The second character value is A, indicating physiological systems.

5 Character 3—Root Operations
For the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section there are three root operations used: Assistance—Value of 0 Performance—Value of 1 Restoration—Value of 2

6 Body System—Character 4
Character 4 in the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section indicates the body system to which the extracorporeal assistance or performance is applied. The possible values are: 2—Cardiac 5—Circulatory 9—Respiratory C—Biliary D—Urinary

7 Duration—Character 5 The fifth character specifies the duration of
the procedure. Durations are: Single Intermittent Continuous Less than 24 consecutive hours 24-96 consecutive hours Greater than 96 consecutive hours Multiple

8 Character 6—Function For the Extracorporeal Assistance and
Performance section, the sixth character indicates the physiological function assisted or performed during the procedure. Functions include: Filtration, output, oxygenation, pacing, rhythm, and ventilation

9 Additional Code Assignment
If a device used for measurement and monitoring is inserted and left in the body, then the insertion of the device is coded as a separate procedure.

10 Character 7—Qualifiers
For the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section, the qualifier value specifies the type of equipment used. Reference Tables 5A0, 5A1, and 5A2 for the specific values.

11 Extracorporeal Therapies
The seventh section within ICD-10-PCS is the Extracorporeal Therapies section. The character 1 value for the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section is 6.

12 Body System—Character 2
The value of character 2, body system, has one value for the Extracorporeal Therapies section. The second character value is A, indicating physiological systems.

13 Root Operations—Character 3
For the Extracorporeal Therapies section, there are 10 root operations used: Atmospheric control Decompression Electromagnetic therapy Hyperthermia Hypothermia Pheresis Phototherapy Shock wave therapy Ultrasound therapy Ultraviolent light therapy

14 Additional Characters
Character 4—The fourth character specifies the body system on which the extracorporeal therapy is performed. Character 5—The fifth character specifies the duration of the procedure. A value of 1, multiple, identifies serial procedure treatment.

15 Final Characters for Extracorporeal Therapies
Character 6 is not specified for extracorporeal therapies and always has a value of Z, no qualifier. Character 7 is used in the root operation “Pheresis” to specify the blood component on which the pheresis is performed. Character 7 in the root operation “Ultrasound Therapy” specifies a specific body part. See table 6A7.

16 Key Points to Remember For the Extracorporeal Assistance and Performance section, the root operation restoration contains a single procedure code that identifies extracorporeal cardioversion. In the Extracorporeal Therapies section, equipment outside the body is used for a therapeutic purpose that does not involve the assistance or performance of a physiological function.

17 Coding Practice Select the code for the following:
Mechanical ventilation, 18 hours

18 Coding Practice Solution
Main term to reference in index: Performance Modifying term: Respiratory, Less than 24 Consecutive Hours, Ventilation Code Assignment: 5A1935Z
