Book written by French author Alexis de Tocqueville
Described democracy in America as a “culture that encouraged Individual initiative, belief in equality, and an active public sphere populated by organizations willing to improve society.”
Idea that sovereignty belonged to ordinary citizens was a massive change in political thought
BUT…political participation was mostly reserved for white males
Women/African Americans and the right to vote

4 million slaves before Civil War. Mostly due to natural increase
“Paternalism”- masked and justified the brutality of slavery
“Necessary evil”
Abolition- Colonization, militant abolitionism (using religion)

Fill out a HAP-P chart
Historical context- Year is important! Write about everything that was going on in Jackson’s presidency up to 1834
Audience: think about where you find political cartoons (Educated guess)
Purpose: think about the purpose of this cartoon and political cartoons in general
POV- Author’s name is given. Is the author for or against Andrew Jackson? Is the author trying to inform or persuade his audience?
