1 WHAT DO ALL OF THESE PLANTS HAVE IN COMMON?

2 Energy for Life When you see statements in red, you should write it down on your paper. All living things require energy to grow and reproduce.

3 Glucose Most living things on Earth break down glucose to get their energy.

4 Glucose When we come to a vocabulary word. Write the word in a different color. autotrophs (plants) use a process called photosynthesis to make glucose heterotrophs (non-plants) eat and then digest food to produce glucose vocabulary word! vocabulary word!

5 This is what your notes should look like so far:

6 Photosynthesis vocabulary word! The process by which any organism with chlorophyll uses radiant energy, carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen. Glucose is stored in leaves, stems and roots Oxygen is given off as a waste

7 Photosynthesis Equation
Diagram this chemical equation on your paper: 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen Sunlight Chlorophyll Reactants Products

8 Reactants 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 Reactants Products
So, where does the plant get the reactants for photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen Sunlight Chlorophyll Reactants Products

9 carbon dioxide and water
Sunlight can enter through the leaf’s surface. For water and carbon dioxide to enter, and oxygen to exit, leaves need a “doorway”.

10 carbon dioxide and water
vocabulary word! Stomata Openings in the underside of the leaf that act as doorways for raw materials and waste to enter and exit the leaf Usually open during the day and closed at night

11 Stomata under a microscope.

12 Where does the reaction happen
Where does the reaction happen? Diagram the plant cell and label the chloroplasts Chloroplasts Photosynthesis takes place inside a small green organelle called a chloroplast.

13 Products What happens to the products made during photosynthesis?: 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen Sunlight Chlorophyll Reactants Products

14 glucose and oxygen The plant stores the glucose in roots, stems or leaves until needed. Luckily for us, the oxygen is given off through the stomata.

15 glucose What does the plant do when it needs energy?
When the plant needs energy, the glucose is sent to the mitochondria in the cell. Inside the mitochondria, the glucose is broken apart to release energy. This is called cellular respiration vocabulary word! On your cell diagram, label the mitochondria. mitochondria

16 Animal cells, like ours, also have mitochondria that break glucose apart to release energy.
The only difference is that plants can make glucose and animals have to eat food so their digestive system can get glucose from their food.

17 Write these two conversions down
Energy Conversion Through photosynthesis plants and some other organisms convert: radiant energy chemical energy (from the sun) (stored as glucose) and energy (light) matter (leaves, stem, bark) Write these two conversions down

18 Pigments Chemical compounds that give things color

19 What makes a plant green?
chlorophyll - green pigment found in plants that is necessary for photosynthesis. Plants can produce more chlorophyll when they get more sunlight. Photosynthesis only occurs in plant cells that have chloroplasts. vocabulary word!

20 All plants with green areas can produce food through photosynthesis.
Do you think anything else can use photosynthesis? photosynthetic bacteria photosynthetic plankton algae

21 Energy for Life Plants provide food for the entire planet.
They provide 90% of Earth’s oxygen. The filter out carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. Why is it important to save trees?
