9 Appearance and First Impressions
Other people’s impressions of you are influenced by the way you look. Your appearance can also have a great impact on your self-image. Your appearance is largely determined by the way you care for yourself. Books, magazines, hairstylists, and image consultants may be able to give you some tips to help you look your best. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

10 Looking Good A few basic guidelines can give anyone the foundation needed to have a pleasing appearance. Grooming means cleaning and caring for the body. You must pay attention to all aspects of personal care, from head to toe. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

11 Caring for Your Skin Your face is likely to be the first feature people notice about you. Having attractive skin is a three-part process. First, you need to know your skin type. Second, you need to know how to care for your skin. Finally, you have to practice what you know. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

12 Skin Type There are four skin types-normal, oily, dry, and combination. Once you have identified your skin type, you can determine how best to care for it. Normal skin should be cleansed every morning and night. Use a lotion or moisturizer after cleansing helps prevent chapping and roughness. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

13 Skin Type – Oily Oily skin should b e cleansed often. Some people use cleansers recommended for oily skin. After cleansing, cold water should be splashed on the face to help shrink pores. An astringent can also be used to tighten pores temporarily. Women with oily skin who wear makeup should look for water-based products. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

14 Skin Type – Oily If your skin is extremely oily and acne becomes a problem, you should see a dermatologist. A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes is treating skin. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

15 Skin Type – Dry Dry skin needs gentle care. Regular soap may be too harsh for dry skin. After washing, apply a moisturizing cream or oil based lotion to keep skin supple. To prevent dry skin, avoid prolonged contact with hot water. Use warm, rather than hot water to wash the skin. Try to limit showers to five minutes. In winter, use a humidifier. The added moisture in the air will help prevent the drying of your skin. All cosmetics should have an oil base. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

16 Skin Type – Combination
If you have combination skin, you may try cleansing according to the majority principle. If your skin is mostly oily, treat it like oily skin. If it is mostly dry, treat it like dry skin. You may need to give special attention to an area that is especially dry or oily. Water-based cosmetics are mostly preferred for combination skin. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

17 Identifying Your Skin Type
9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

18 Identifying Your Skin Type - Normal
Your skin type is normal if it: Takes about four hours after cleansing for a slight shine to appear on your nose, chin, or forehead. Feels smooth, soft, and slightly moist. Has a clear, smooth texture with few, if any enlarged pores or blemishes. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

19 Identifying Your Skin Type - Dry
Your skin type is dry if it- Takes six or more hours after cleansing for a slight shine to appear on your nose, chin, or forehead. Has a fine texture with small pores. Feels tight and has fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Becomes red, sore, and chapped in cold weather. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

20 Identifying Your Skin Type - Oily
Your skin type is oily if it- Takes one to two hours after cleansing for an oily shine to appear on your nose, chin, or forehead. Has a coarse texture and enlarged pores, especially on the chin and nose. Develops pimples and blackheads. Shows a little flakiness around the nose where excess oil has dried from exposure to the air. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

21 Identifying Your Skin Type - Combination
Your skin type is combination if it- Takes three hours after cleansing for an oily shine to appear on your nose, chin, or forehead. Has enlarged pores and blackheads in the oily areas of the nose, chin, or forehead. Feels dry around the eyes, cheeks, mouth, and throat. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

22 Basic Hygiene Caring for your skin involves cleaning more than just your face. Basic hygiene, or practices that promote good health, include cleansing your whole body. You need to take a bath or shower every day. Soap and warm water will remove dirt, oils, and dead skin cells. This will help you feel and smell fresh. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

23 Basic Hygiene You can control body odor b y using a deodorant or antiperspirant. As you perspire, bacteria act on the perspiration to cause body odor. Deodorant is a grooming product that controls body odor by interfering with the growth of bacteria. In addition to controlling odor, an antiperspirant reduces the flow of perspiration. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

24 A Smooth Shave Hair removal is another aspect of skin care.
An electric preshave lotion may be used for shaving with an electric razor. Shaving cream will soften the beard before shaving with a safety razor. Light, even strokes with a sharp blade will produce a close shave. Shaving in the same direction as the hair grows helps protect delicate skin. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

25 A Smooth Shave After shaving with either type of razor, men should rinse their skin. Rinsing first with warm water and then cold water will remove shaving aid residue and close the pores. Some men choose to apply aftershave to soothe the skin. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

26 A Smooth Shave Women moisten their legs and underarms with shaving cream or water before shaving with a safety razor. Short, careful strokes with a sharp blade produce the best results. Applying moisturizing cream or lotion after shaving helps keep skin soft and smooth. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

27 A Smooth Shave or NOT Some women use chemical depilatories, which dissolve unwanted hair so it can be washed away. Read and follow the package directions carefully. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

28 Your Skin and the Sun Another important aspect of skin care is avoiding exposure to the sun. The sun is damaging to the skin and is a leading cause of skin cancer. People of all ages and skin colors are at risk of developing skin cancer. Everyone should take precautions to avoid sun exposure. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

29 Your Skin and the Sun Try to stay out of the sun when rays are strongest—between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The sun’s damaging rays can be reflected off sand, water, and concrete. You need to protect your skin even if you will be in a shaded area. To protect yourself, wear long sleeves, pants, and a hat. Apply a good sunscreen to exposed skin. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

30 Caring for Your Teeth Regular dental checkups and daily brushing and flossing should be a part of your health routine. Brush teeth a least twice daily and floss once a day. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. Plaque is a colorless film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. It combines with sugar to create acids that attack the gums and tooth enamel. This can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Dental floss is effective in removing plaque from between teeth. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

31 Caring for Your Hair Hair care is basic to a healthy, attractive appearance. Before you can care for your hair, you need to know if it is oily, dry, or normal. Oily hair tends to look limp a day or two after shampooing. It begins to cling close to the scalp. Dry hair, on the other hand feels dry and tends to have a “fly away” look. If neither of these descriptions applies to your hair, you probably have normal hair. Hair care involves a number of steps. Proper shampooing, conditioning, and styling all play an important role in your appearance. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

32 Shampooing How often should you shampoo your hair? That depends on your hair type. Oily hair may need to be shampooed daily. Once or twice a week may be enough for dry hair. If you have problems with dandruff or scalp infections, try shampooing more often. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

33 Shampooing Choose a shampoo formulated for your hair type. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Residue from shampoo can leave a dulling film on hair and cause flaking and itching. When shampooing oily hair, use cool water for the final rinse. Hot water will activate the oil glands and make the hair even more oily. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

34 Caring for Your Hair Choose combs and brushes that will treat your hair gently. Combs should have teeth with smooth, rounded edges. Brushes should have natural bristles or soft bristles with rounded tips. Sharp teeth or stiff bristles with squared-off tips can break hairs and scratch the scalp. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

35 Conditioning Many people condition their hair as a final step in the shampooing process. Conditioning products can help reduce tangling and make hair more manageable. They can help restore the appearance of hair that has been damaged by overstyling and chemical treatments. Conditioning products also give hair more body, bounce, shine, and softness. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

36 Styling The basic rules for hairstyles are the same for men and women. Consider the texture of your hair, the shape of your face, and your lifestyle when choosing a hairstyle. A good hairstyle begins with a good haircut. A professional hairstylist should be able to cut your hair to suit your hair’s texture and the shape of your face. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

37 Styling Your lifestyle will affect your choice of a hairstyle. You should be able to care for your hair within a reasonable amount of time. Your hairstyle should be suited to your activities. It should not be a safety hazard as you work. If should not be an inconvenience to you if you participate in sports. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

38 Caring for Your Hands and Feet
Your hands are in sight most of the time. They are an important part of your overall appearance. Begin by washing your hands frequently to keep them clean. Use a nailbrush on knuckles and under nails when your hands are especially soiled. Dry each fingernail separately, pushing cuticles back as you go. Never try to push dry cuticles back. This tears them and makes them sore. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

39 Weekly Hand Care Cleanse hands thoroughly.
Clean under nail tips with a manicure stick. Shape and smooth nails with a flexible emery board. File from underneath each nail in one direction only. Scrub nails in warm, soapy water with a small nailbrush to soften the cuticles. Gently push back the cuticle with a manicure stick. Trim any hangnails or ragged edges but never trim the cuticle itself. Massage conditioning cream around each nail and over the hands. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

40 Caring for Your Hands and Feet
Your feet get a lot of use and abuse. Every day, you should wash your feet thoroughly using soap and a washcloth. Scrub around toenails with a nailbrush. Use a pumice stone to smooth rough spots and calluses. Dry your feet especially between the toes. Apply a moisturizing cream or lotion. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

41 Caring for Your Hands and Feet
Trim toenails straight across. Shaping them tends to encourage ingrown toenails, which can be very painful. Foot problems are common. Athlete’s foot is a contagious fungus infection that people can pick up anywhere. Over-the-counter products can often cure athlete’s foot. While treating the infection, keep the feet dry, use absorbent powders, and change shoes and socks frequently. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

42 Caring for Your Hands and Feet
Other foot problems, like plantar warts and stubborn corns, need the attention of a podiatrist. A podiatrist is a physician specializing in the care of feet. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

43 Health Risks Chapter 12-4 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

44 Topic Terms Passive Smoking Smokeless Tobacco
Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

45 Practicing health habits to promote wellness involves avoiding certain health risks. These risks include tobacco as well as alcohol and other drugs. They also include sexually transmitted diseases. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

46 Tobacco Cigarette smoking is the largest preventable cause of illness and premature death in the US. People who smoke are more likely to suffer from heart disease, respiratory infections, and lung cancer. Smoking during pregnancy can be harmful to the unborn child. Pregnant women who smoke have a higher risk of miscarriage and premature delivery. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

47 Babies born to women who smoke often weigh less, and their future growth and development may be impaired. Passive smoking is also a health concern. Passive smoking is the inhaling of smoke in a smoke-filled environment. Small children are highly affected by passive smoking. Studies show that children of smokers are more likely to suffer from respiratory ailments than children of nonsmokers. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

48 The use of smokeless tobacco products involves health risks as well
The use of smokeless tobacco products involves health risks as well. These are products such as chewing tobacco and snuff. Their use has been linked to gum cancer and irritations of the gums and lips. People who quit smoking enjoy almost immediate health benefits. Within 24 hours, the risk of heart attack decreases. Within weeks, the body’s energy level increases. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

49 Alcohol Alcohol is a depressant drug that is a serious health risk. Health care for alcohol-related illnesses and accidents costs millions of dollars every year. Alcohol can damage the brain, liver, stomach, and other organs. It also interferes with judgment, vision, muscle coordination, and reaction to time. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

50 Another health problem related to alcohol is alcoholism
Another health problem related to alcohol is alcoholism. Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol. It is a disease that affects teenagers as well as adults. Alcoholics lose control of their drinking. They become dependent on alcohol. Alcoholism interferes with their health, personal relationships, and ability to function. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

51 Once alcohol has entered the body, coffee and cold showers will not help lessen its effects. Alcohol will continue to circulate in the body until the liver burns it up. This occurs at the rate of about one drink every two hours for a 150-pound person. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

52 Other Drugs Alcohol is not the only drug that poses a health risk to teens. A variety of other drugs—both legal and illegal—can be hazardous to health. Drug abuse is the use of a drug for a purpose other than it was intended. Even legal drugs purchased over the counter or with a prescription can be abused. Never use someone else’s prescription drugs. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

53 Some legal products not sold as drugs are used as drugs
Some legal products not sold as drugs are used as drugs. Some people consume coffee, tea, and some soft drinks for the stimulating effect of the caffeine they contain. Some people inhale paint, glue, and nail polish remover for their intoxicating effects. Drug abuse can damage your health, interfere with your ability to function, and affect your mind. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

54 Some drugs cause addiction, which is a dependence of the body on a continuing supply of the drug. After an addiction has developed, taking the drug away will cause agonizing withdrawal symptoms. Even experimenting with drugs can be dangerous. Experimenting often leads to more frequent drug use and serious health and legal problems. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

55 Long-Term Health Risks of Drugs
Caffeine: headaches, nervousness, stomach disorders. Depressants such as PCP, tranquilizers, Quaaludes, and barbiturates: fatigue, confusion, paranoia, addiction. Hallucinogens such as LSD: hallucinations Inhalants: damage to the nervous system, kidneys, and blood. Marijuana: learning difficulties, lung damage, possible damage to the reproductive organs, psychological addiction. Narcotics such as heroin and other opiates: addiction, malnutrition, risk of overdose and hepatitis, severe withdrawal symptoms. Steroids: acne, stunted growth, sterility Stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines (speed): nervousness, severe depression, nose damage, hallucinations, damage to the heart and brain. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

56 Sexually Transmitted Diseases
As a health risk, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a growing concern in the US. This concern is especially great for young adults. STDs are spread through sexual contact. They can also be passed from pregnant women to their infants. They are not spread through casual contact, such as hugging or shaking hands. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

57 The only secure way to prevent STDs is to abstain from sex.
The main STDs that are of concern are AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, and herpes. The symptoms and side effects of these diseases range from an outbreak of blisters to blindness to death. You have a responsibility to prevent the spread of STDs. You can do this by becoming educated about STDs. The only secure way to prevent STDs is to abstain from sex. The risk of contracting STDs becomes higher as a person has more sexual partners. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

58 AIDS The most deadly STD is acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This disease is causes by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which breaks down the body’s immune system. This leaves the body vulnerable to diseases a healthy body could resist. HIV is transmitted through such body fluids as blood and semen. It can be contracted through sharing contaminated needles as well as sexual contact. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

59 In the past, some people contracted HIV from blood transfusions
In the past, some people contracted HIV from blood transfusions. However, this risk is very small since all blood is screened for HIV. There is no risk of contracting HIV from donating blood because fresh needles are used for each donation. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

60 Decisions That Affect Your Health
You make many routine decisions every day. You decide what to eat, where to go, and what to wear. Take a minute when making these decisions to think about how they might affect your health. Not all health-related decisions are routine. Some people have a desire to participate in high-risk activities such as skydiving. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2

61 If you are intrigued by a certain degree of risk, take precautions
If you are intrigued by a certain degree of risk, take precautions. You need to do whatever is necessary to make the activity as safe as possible. Wear protective clothing and plan what you will do if problems arise. Avoid risks when you can. When you must take risks, address them sensibly. This will help you protect your health and make your life more fulfilling. 9/21/2018 Kilgore HS Q2
