4 The Magna Carta Learning Objectives:
To understand what the Magna Carta was Be able to explain who benefitted from the Magna Carta at the time To begin to consider why the Magna Carta is still important today

5 What is this system called? Who had the most power and why?
Bishops were also important in the hierarchy of power. They worked for the Catholic Church. There were also Freeman. They owned their own land and worked for themselves. However, half the population of England were UNFREE serfs or villeins (1.5m) Population around 3million: 1 king; 100 barons; 4500 knights; remainder are peasants What is this system called? Who had the most power and why? Who had the least amount of power and why? What was the relationship between each group?

6 What was the Magna Carta?
June, 1215 at Runnymede Charter of 63 clauses The Magna Carta is often seen as the document that laid down for the first time the rights and freedoms of the English people. The barons put this Charter together and were very much looking out for themselves as much of the Charter was concerned with their rights.

Homework: You are going to interview a Professor of Medieval History Carefully consider what you would like to find out about the importance of Magna Carta and then write five interview questions Read the article ‘Professor of Medieval History Interview’ (BBC History Magazine, Feb 2015) Use the article to answer your questions using the words of the Professor (1) To understand what the Magna Carta was (2) Be able to explain who benefitted from the Magna Carta at the time (3) To begin to consider why the Magna Carta is still important today
