Inside of the earth is made up of several layers The properties differ from Layer to Layer Earth’s layers are divided in 2 ways: Based on Composition (chemical properties) Based on physical properties (state of matter or how it transmits waves)

6. Crust
Outermost layer (c)- thinnest 2 types: Continental crust: thicker but less dense than oceanic Contains mostly Silicon, Oxygen and Aluminum Oceanic: thinner but denser: Contains magnesium, Carbon, and Iron.

Made up of solid crust and upper mantle
It is in pieces called tectonic plates

Made up of slow moving solid rock
The tectonic plates in the lithosphere float on top of this layer.

Slower flowing rock than the asthenosphere

Responsible for earths magnetic field
