1 Layers of the Earth

2 bellwork When sediment is pressed together and cemented, the sediment becomes ________ Metamorphic rock can be altered by temperature and pressure to form a different type of ______________ rock Describe the difference between weathering and erosion

3 Earths Layers EQ: What are earths compositional and physical layers layers? O bj: Identify the compositional and structural layers and describe their properties

4 What is inside the earth?
Inside of the earth is made up of several layers The properties differ from Layer to Layer Earth’s layers are divided in 2 ways: Based on Composition (chemical properties) Based on physical properties (state of matter or how it transmits waves)

5 What are Earth’s compositional layers
Compositional Layers are classified based on chemical properties: the mix of chemicals in the layer

6 Crust Outermost layer (c)- thinnest 2 types: Continental crust: thicker but less dense than oceanic Contains mostly Silicon, Oxygen and Aluminum Oceanic: thinner but denser: Contains magnesium, Carbon, and Iron.

7 B. Mantle Hot flowing melted rock (B)
Has convection currents: moves heated material due to density differences Cool rock sinks, and warm rock rises contains more Magnesium than the crust

8 A. Core Inner most layer (a) Densest layer – makes up 1/3 of earth’s mass Mostly iron and nickel. Contains less oxygen, silicon, Al

9 Physical Layers Divided based on physical properties (state of matter and movement)

10 1. Lithosphere - A The Outermost rigid layer of the earth
Made up of solid crust and upper mantle It is in pieces called tectonic plates

11 2. Asthenosphere (B) Layer of weak or soft mantle
Made up of slow moving solid rock The tectonic plates in the lithosphere float on top of this layer.

12 3. Mesosphere (c) Strong part of lower mantle
Slower flowing rock than the asthenosphere

13 4. Outer core (D) Liquid layer of Earth’s core
Responsible for earths magnetic field

14 5. Inner core (E) Dense solid center of earth
Made up of iron and nickel

15

16 Exit: How can earth’s interior be compared to a hard boiled egg?
List the earth’s 5 physical layers from the outside of the earth to the inside. What causes the mantle to “flow” In which physical layer would you find tectonic plates? Which compositional layer are you on?
