Chemical Nomenclature
Covalent Compounds
2
Molecular Compounds Covalent bonds occur between two nonmetals.
Compounds made up of only nonmetals are called molecular compounds
3
Molecular Compounds The same elements can often bond in several ways with each other: For example, Carbon and Oxygen can combine as CO, a poisonous gas, and CO2, the gas you exhale when breathing. So, molecular compound names must specify how many of each atom participate in the compound.
4
Molecular compounds Prefix Number of Atoms Mono- 1 Hexa- 6 Di- 2
Hepta- 7 Tri- 3 Octa- 8 Tetra- 4 Nona- 9 Penta- 5 Deca- 10
5
Molecular Compounds Keys to remember:
The mono- prefix is only applied to the second element. The more electronegative element is listed second. All compounds end in -ide
7
Dinitrogen Tetrahydride Dihydrogen monosulfide Nitrogen monoxide
Practice Write the names for the following compounds: N2H4 H2S NO CBr4 Dinitrogen Tetrahydride Dihydrogen monosulfide Nitrogen monoxide Carbon tetrabromide
