EQ: How are phrases used in sentences? Today I am: learning about different types of phrases So that I can: distinguish them from clauses in a sentence I’ll know I have it if: I can correctly identify 8/10 phrases in example sentences.

Phrase vs. Clause Phrase – group of words that functions together with EITHER a subject OR a verb, but not both can act as a noun, adjective, preposition, verb, or adverb Clause – group of words that functions together with both a subject and a verb can be independent or dependent is necessary to a complete sentence

Noun phrase a phrase functioning as a noun in a sentence
contains a noun and other associated words Examples: They bought a huge beautiful home. (object) A woman in the window shouted for help. (subject) One of our close relatives bought a beautiful red car. (subject & object)

Prepositional phrase group of words containing a preposition and the object of the preposition may contain other modifiers Examples The kids were laughing at the joker. He is sleeping on the carpet. The teacher looked at the blackboard.

Adjective phrase a phrase functioning as an adjective in a sentence
modifies (or adds to the meaning) of a noun or pronoun Examples: A kid on the roof is looking at the sky. (modifies kid) A lady with long hair is walking in the garden. (modifies lady) A student from my college won the competition. (modifies student)

Adverb phrase a phrase functioning as an adverb in a sentence
modifies a verb or another adverb Examples: The racer was running very fast. (modifies running) She always speaks in a respectful way. (modifies speaks) The kid sat beside her mother. (modifies sat)

Verb phrase group of main verbs and helping verbs in a sentence
performs the action Examples: She is writing a letter. They have been playing since this morning. He has taken his annual exam.
