A Little Background Info:
In the 1750’s France was Great Britain’s biggest rival in the struggle to build a world empire. The 13 colonies will favor Great Britain because they still thought of themselves as “British.” Plus they were excited to EXPAND!

Had strained relations with the NA Built towns and raised families Protestant faith 70,000 in population Fur Traders Catholic Priests Developed friendly relations with NA Fur Trading led to military alliances (Watch out British)

The First Clash The French built a fort on land the British had given away to wealthy planters Virginia governor sent out a militia to evict the French Led by George Washington the British form an outpost called Fort Necessity Fighting back and forth, the British were forced to surrender **Start of the French and Indian War And the 4th War between these rivals!

1755 Early French Victories
Gen. Edward Braddock (British) assisted by G. Washington evict the French from the OH Valley Attacked 10 mi. from Ft. Duquesne by 1500 French and Indian forces. Turned and FLED!!!!! Colonists started to question the competence of the British Army

1757 William Pitt Becomes Foreign Minister
He understood colonial concerns. He offered them a compromise: - Loyalty & military support would be reimbursed col **Got the Iroquois’ support. RESULTS? Colonial morale increased by 1758.

Turning the Tide of War 9/1759- outside of Quebec, French troops were caught off guard and attacked Short but deadly battle The British triumph led them to victory in the war War officially ends in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris

1763 Treaty of Paris France --> lost everything except a few small islands in the West Indies. Spain --> got all French lands west of the Mississippi River, New Orleans, but lost Florida to England. England --> got all French lands in Canada, all land east of the Mississippi River, exclusive rights to Caribbean slave trade, and commercial dominance in India.

New Problems…. NA feared that the growing number of British settlers would drive away their game they depended on for survival. 1763- Ottawa leader, PONTIAC, recognized the cost of the French loss NA captured 8 British forts in the Ohio Valley British “gifts” of smallpox-infected blankets from Fort Pitt.

Proclamation of 1763 To avoid further conflict the Proclamation of 1763 was created banning all settlement west of the Appalachians. ***********VERY HARD TO ENFORCE**********
