Measuring Matter Chapter 2 Section 2
2
Weight and Mass Your________ is a measure of the force of gravity on you. On Earth, all objects are attracted toward the center of the planet by the force of the Earth’s gravity. On the moon your weight about 1/6th of your weight here on Earth.
3
Mass The ________ of an object is the measurement of the amount of matter in the object. Unlike weight, mass does not change with location, even when the force of gravity on an object changes. This is why we use mass in science. The mass of an object is a physical property.
4
Units of Mass To measure the properties of matter, scientists use a system called the ________ __________ of _______. This is an abbreviated “____” after its French name, Système International. The SI unit of mass is the ___________(___)
5
Volume The amount of space that matter occupies is called its __________. Units of Volume Liter (L) milliliter (mL) cubic centimeter (cm³)
6
Calculating Volume The volumes of a solid are usually expresses in cubic centimeters. Measurement of a brick Volume = length x width x height
7
Density Two different materials may have the same volume but they don’t necessarily have the same mass. ___________ relates the mass of a material in a given volume.
8
Density is expressed as the number of grams in one cubic centimeter
Density= Mass Volume Density of water
9
Density You can determine the density of a sample of matter by dividing its mass by its volume Block Mass = 200g Volume = 250 cm³
10
Density Sinking or Floating?
Objects with densities greater than that of water will sink Objects that are less dense will float. Iron 7.9 g/cm³ Cedar Wood .38 g/cm³ (380 kg/m³)
11
Density Density is a physical property of a substance.
Why use density? To determine whether or not it will float. In water or other fluids Can be used to identify unknown objects.
