Earthquake To Friedman, the Intifada can be described as an earthquake
“…I always think of the intifada as an earthquake – an eruption of twenty years’ worth of pent-up geothermal steam – raw Palestinian rage – that opened the Palestinian-Israeli fault line and created a physical chasm between the two communities,” (Friedman, 376).

The Intifada It was a Palestinian uprising from 1987-1993
Occurred in the occupied territories and mainland Israel Famous for civil disobedience, riots, strikes, and violence against Israeli soldiers and civilians

After an Israeli truck driver struck and killed a group of Palestinians, a mass outburst occurred.
Thousands of Palestinians protested, in what was the start of the Initfada Was the result of Palestinian hatred of the Israeli occupation, poverty, social status, etc.

Palestinians were trying to gain attention to their problems
Tried to start their own country out of the occupied territories The PLO was not in charge. The Palestinian people were fighting for a new country, not the destruction of Israel

Palestinians oftentimes attacked Israeli soldiers with crude weapons
Palestinians oftentimes attacked Israeli soldiers with crude weapons. The Israeli responses were swift and brutal (assault, arrest, etc.) Thousands of Palestinians were killed or injured. Fewer Israeli's were seriously injured/killed

Results Palestinian’s gained global media attention
PLO suffers a setback Israel doesn’t give back land The chasm between the two societies still has not closed
