4 Sin: Mortal Sin: Venial Sin:
“that which was is willfully, freely, and voluntarily done, said, or willed against the law of God.” (Augustine) There were legal, psychological, and theological dimensions. Intention became more important from the twelfth century. Sin was a disorder, a human act, and a sign of a disharmony between human reason and the will of God and humankind. It was done against the good, including one’s own good. Mortal Sin: done with full consent of the will and on a grave matter. It deprive the sinner of all sanctifying grace and led to eternal damnation if unconfessed and not genuinely repented. Venial Sin: disposed the soul toward death and was the greatest of all evils except for mortal sin. It did not by itself lead to eternal damnation. Friday, September 21, 2018
