WHAT IS DIVERSITY? Diversity is having variety and in America that is what we have! "We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams" (Jimmy Carter). In our society, we respect variety in culture and ethnic background, race, lifestyle and belief. Differences in language, dress, food, where parents were born, race and religion are acceptable.

HOW DOES DIVERSITY CHANGE AMERICA?
American diversity has a huge impact on our country. Without diversity, the United States would not be the same. Diversity brings many things including... new religions foods cultures music clothing craftsmanship

IMMIGRATION TIMELINE first European interaction with Native Americans first slaves brought to Virginia 1800's - Western Europe, mostly Germany Protestant or Catholic high literacy Chinese came due to economic hardships brought culture and customs faced the Chinese Exclusion Act (1923) California Gold Rush, people from all over come to the Pacific Coast for gold

Irish Potato Famine famine caused Irish to migrate to America brought their culture with them 1880's - Southern and Eastern European immigrants Old world was getting too large liked the idea of Capitalism impoverished and illiterate took factory jobs Japanese went to Hawaii for sugar plantation jobs California to be farm workers or servants assimilated badly, but brought culture

Filipinos go to Hawaii for sugar plantation work brought their traditions and customs US granted Puerto Ricans citizenship many rushed to New York for city jobs naturally brought their own lifestyle Immigration act limits European Immigration greatly reduces immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe 1930's 's - high immigration from Europe due to Jews fleeing from Nazis

AFRICAN AMERICANS 1619 - first slaves to America
Harriet Tubman escapes slavery becomes major leader in the Underground Railroad Uncle Tom's Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe stirs anti-slavery ideas Emancipation Proclamation all slaves now free Civil War ends th Amendment blacks are now citizens

th Amendment blacks can vote NAACP founded Jackie Robinson, first black major league baseball player 1950's-1960's - Civil Disobedience peaceful protest, March on Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination Voting Rights Act outlawed discrimination to voting

WOMEN 1848 - Seneca Falls Convention
women start to be individualized WWI causes women to work th Amendment women can vote Fair Labor Standards Act equal minimum wage regardless of gender Equal Pay Act equal wages for work regardless of sex, race, religion etc.

National Organization for women founded by Betty Friedan Title IX bans sex discrimination in schools Sandra Day O'Connor first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court Geraldine Ferraro first woman vice president candidate
