On your own take a few minutes to reflect on and note what struck you the most from:

Learning over a significant length of time
K-12 collective learning
“Quality instruction is not due simply to a well-prepared teacher with good intentions; it requires ongoing support from others, a solid understanding of the content, well-tested materials, and time.” (p )
Learning is needed in pedagogy, content, and student learning.

6. Science Teachers’ Learning: Enhancing Opportunities, Creating Supportive Context
Teachers did not experience learning science the way we now need to teach it.
Gap between current instructional practices and the vision of Framework.
Teachers need knowledge in three domains:
Knowledge of content and students
Knowledge of content and instruction
Knowledge of content and curriculum
Talk about ambitious teaching practices.

8. How should we fill the jar?
Show them the jar and the stones, gravel and sand. Have them discuss how fill it to get as much in as possible.

9. Priorities – First things first
We need to focus on no more than 5 critical things moving forward with implementation. We can eventually get to the sand but we can’t start with it.
If everything is a priority than we really don’t have any priorities.

10. Things to remember as we work today
We are going to talk a lot about what adults need to do in year one of implementation but lets remember it is to support all students having access to high quality K-12 science learning opportunities.

Crosscutting concepts
Coherent learning progression: conceptual change overtime NOT layering “schooled knowledge” over naïve understanding.

We need to keep these in our minds as we think about supporting teachers next year.

Science focused workshops:
Dr. Malcom Butler, University of Central Florida – How can we support all students in the secondary science classroom?
Dr. Brian Mandell, SSEC – Leveraging elementary curriculum materials to support equitable science instruction
TBD – Hoping for one focused on leadership
Lesson Study focused workshops:
Dr. Catherine Lewis, Mills College - How can lesson study support equity in the classroom?
Dr. Akhiko Takahashi, DePaul University- How can we build school wide lesson study?
Dr. Krystal Barber, SUNY Cortland – Facilitated panel discussion with area teachers with lesson study experience

NYSSLS for 7th Grade Teachers – July 31st and August 1st, 8:30-3:30
NYSSLS for 8th Grade Teachers – August 2nd & 3rd, 8:30-3:30
NYSSLS for Administrators – August 7th, 8:30-3:30
6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers are welcome to attend both the 7th and 8th grade days
Tentatively planning on running another administrator and 7th & 8th grade teacher PD in December
