Began when Northern Europeans reached a hill at near the River Tiber in Italy. Built villages and settled to farm. They got rid of their king and established a Republic. Allowed them to strengthen their unity and fight to conquer and protect their land. When war broke with Carthage they had to learn to fight at sea. Rome’s enemies joined together under the leadership of Hannibal. Rome defeated its enemies.

8 Story of Rome Defeating Carthage made Rome the greatest power in the Mediterranean. Romans began to live in luxury. Led to corruption (huge taxes, robbery, paid for elections). Civil war broke out in Rome. Spartacus led a slave revolt. Fought the Roman army with a Slave army of 90,000. Julius Caesar and Pompey struggled for control of the government. Caesar won, Pompey killed in Egypt, Caesar made Cleopatra queen.

9 Story of Rome Caesar killed by his enemies (stabbed in senate) despite wanting to improve city. Octavian (Caesar’s nephew) defeated his enemies and became 1st emperor of Rome. Augustus, built up his army, wanted to invade north of River Rhine, but lost. New settlements led empire to build new roads. Augustus’ death led to a battle of succession. Hadrian eventually became Emperor. Strengthened frontiers and built Stone Wall in Britain. Soon after Rome achieved it’s greatest extent, Barbarians began to attack its northern & eastern borders.

10 Story of Rome Government affairs began to be highly influenced by Rome’s army. Many leaders prompted up by troops. The Vast Empire was hard to control, leading to Civil Wars, while the Persians began to attack to regain land. Romans no longer believe the Empire could protect them. Led to spread of Christianity (blamed for problems of Rome) Lack of money made it difficult for Rome to pay armies. Constantine won battle to become emperor, made Christianity state religion, created Constantinople. Barbarians invaded west. Kept many of the Roman traditions.
