1 Capstone Practical Exercise

2 Terminal Learning Objective
Action: Discuss the conduct of an assigned tactical action. Condition: A classroom environment using class members and instructor dialogue with in-class tactical example. Standard: Choose appropriate Hybrid Threat tactical tasks and applicable sub-tasks, identifying task and purpose by tactical function. Successfully conduct Hybrid Threat staff planning Deliver group briefs Take part in group discussions You can reinforce a credible baseline of Threat thinking and actions with reference to the “Threat Tactical Task List” in TC Tactical Situation: --Go to next slide Threat activity in recent months minimal.

3 PE Admin Overview Teams will be assigned a DATE-based country and mission These will be oppositional, but not necessarily connected Teams will develop and brief a COA Identify all major parts by function with task and purpose Articulate the conduct of the selected tactic(s) and key elements considered Timeline: Part 1 Briefing: NLT Day Part 2 Briefing: NLT Day

4 Team PE Folders Reference documents: [add url path]
These are read-only Team working documents: [add url path] Save your work here. You will be able to access them for your briefing. If using both screens, please indicate which in the filename (e.g. “team1_capstone_left”)

CJFLCC VII(US) DONOVIA GORGAS II 50 X 348 352 350 356 X 346 ATROPIA LIMARIA NOTE: Although Atropia is depicted as “friendly,” both sides will use similar HT tactics. They may have differing ROE. The Arianian Strategic High Command are expecting the a coalition forces to reinforce the Atropians. They expect that the force will start arriving soon at the the Port of POTI and transit across Gorgas entering Atropia in the NW. Therefore before the coalition arrives they have decided to preemptively attack. The Arianan ME (OSC 1) is to seize to retain BAKU with its action force, the secondary effort is to ensure freedom of movement for the action force using its enabling force and its tertiary effort is to prevent reinforcement from Limaria or a flanking maneuver by the coalition with the Security force. Limaria currently occupies Atropia’s Lower Janga region, an area fought over by Atropia and Limaria for over a quarter of a century. At present, over 95% of the Lower Janga region population belongs to the Limarian ethnic group. Refugees displaced from the Lower Janga dispute amount to over one million people. An estimated 400,000 Atropian Limarians and 30,000 Lower Janga Limarians fled to Limaria or Donovia to avoid the conflict. An estimated 800,000 Atropians from Limaria or Lower Janga sought refuge in Atropia. Various other ethnic groups in Lower Janga also evacuated to refugee camps in Atropia or Ariana. All efforts to settle the dispute since 1997 have failed. Tensions still exist with Atropia over the disputed Lower Janga region, an Atropian province that is currently occupied by ethnic Limarians. Additionally, Ariana’s and Limaria’s improved trade relations have created tension with the US. Limaria will attempt to maintain relations with all the Caucasus powers due to its precarious economic development and isolated geopolitical position. X 306 304 XX 19 XX 13 Diplomatic breakdown between Ariana and Atropia over oil deposits. Talks between US, Atropia, and Ariana end without progress. US sends warship to region I&W that upcoming exercise is actually an invasion Arianan “exercise” moves forces near border towards Baku Atropian forces reposition forces to block, repel Arianan invasion US/Joint forces sending forces to support Atropia, not yet arrived. To prevent penetration of the Arianan 13th Division, the Atropian 345th Brigade is defending IVO “Avshar Gap” ARIANA

8 Questions? Integrated Area Defenses may be employed at all levels. This form of defense seeks to take advantage of complex terrain and tends to reduce the effectiveness of strike efforts by opponents as a consequence of dispersion. The OPFOR does not orient the Area Defenses on retaining terrain rather the defense is oriented imposing delay and inflicting casualties. Fundamentally, an Integrated Area Defense consists of non-contiguous defensive positions that may not be within direct fire support range of each other but are integrated in C2 and purpose. Substantial physical gaps may, in fact exist. In these gaps the OPFOR uses precision long-range fires, Special Purpose Forces, insurgent and militia forces to destroy key systems, cause politically unacceptable casualties, harass the enemy and maintain contact. Some defensive positions in area defenses may include Complex Battle Positions or heavily defended spaces that are able to fight in all directions within the limitation of the terrain. These defenses are generally tied to complex or urban terrain. OPFOR conducts counterattacks at all levels in the gaps or inside defensive positions to impose delay, inflict casualties or preserve critical points in the defense. This form of defense requires extensive planning, preparation and pre-positioning of forces and critical C2 systems. Success is dependent on the two critical factors—Transition Operations that allow the OPFOR to occupy defensive positions and a coalition driven by a timeline for completion.

9 Atropian Phase 2 II II II II X XX
(U) PH 1 (Deploy - Complete) ATROPIAN forces conduct a rapid deployment to the Western Sector. (U) PH 2 (Delay). Conduct defense to delay penetration of PL APLHA Until reinforcements (AT BDET) arrive. Deploy reconnaissance forces to accurately report ARIANIAN composition and disposition. (U) PH 3 (Defend). Defend IVO Surenavan/Askeran. Arianan forces likely to be a BTG of the 13th DIV. Beylagan loyalties are split – a nacent insurgency exists. Guerrillas may assist, but will be reluctant to stray from foothills BPT protect foothill strongholds near Surenavan and/or Askeran. A BDET of 356th AT BDE is moving through the mountains to reinforce.
