3 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Thanksgiving (Page 75) In the preface the priest, in the name of God’s people, glorifies God the Father and gives thanks to Him for the entire gift of salvation and for some aspect of it celebrated in the feast or season of the day. The first part will be used at every Mass and is called: The Preface Dialogue. The second part is specific to the Mass or group of Masses. 12/3/2011

4 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Acclamation (Page 77) In this prayer, the whole congregation, joining with the heavenly powers sings the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy). This acclamation, which constitutes part of the Eucharistic Prayer itself is pronounced by all the people with the Priest.

5 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Invocation of the Holy Spirit The Church, through the words and actions of its priest, implores the power of the Holy Spirit that the gifts offered by human hands be consecrated, that is, become Christ’s Body and Blood, and that the unblemished sacrificial Victim to be consumed in Communion may be for the salvation of those who will partake of it. The Church calls this event the epiclesis, a Greed word that means “to call down.” You will recognize this event by putting his hands – palms down over the chalice and the bells will ring. 12/3/2011

6 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
The Words of Institution and the Consecration Through the words and acts of Jesus Christ, the sacrifice is celebrated which he himself instituted at the Last Supper. Under the appearances of bread and wine, Jesus offered the apostles his Body and Blood to eat and drink and commanded they carry on this mystery. 12/3/2011

7 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
The remembering and Offering Prayer The Church fulfills the command Jesus gave the apostles to do the Eucharist in memory of him, especially his Passion, Resurrection, Death, and Ascension. This remembering is more than recalling a past event. It acknowledges that these mysteries of Jesus are present at this celebration. The assembled church through the Spirit offers Jesus, the spotless victim, to the Father. We unite our lives and surrender ourselves to God in union with Jesus our mediator. This is also called from Greek: Anamnesis which means: calling to mind. Think: re-presentation and not re-enactment! 12/3/2011

8 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Oblation The Church by this very act offers the unblemished sacrificial Victim in the Holy Spirit to the Father. The Church’s intention is that the faithful not only offer this unblemished sacrificial Victim but also learn to offer their very selves, and so day by day to be brought, through the mediation of Christ, into unity with God and with each other, so that God may at last be all in all.

9 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Intercessions We celebrate the Mass in communion with the entire church in heaven and earth, with all her members including the living and dead who are called to share in Christ’s salvation. This is the “Communion of Saints” in action, because we are all called to participate in the redemption and salvation purchased by the Body and Blood of Christ. 12/3/2011

10 Overview of the Eucharistic Prayer General Meaning to the Part of:
Doxology This prayer ends with an outpouring of praise for this supreme gift of grace with the great Amen! 12/3/2011
