Lecture Notes: Ch. 15.3 Rise of Fascism
Ppl. in Eastern Europe lost faith in democracy: Such as Germany, Italy, & Hungary Especially the New independent countries after WWI such as: Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, etc.

Democracy strong in Western nations
Such as US, France, & GB. Nations in East. Euro. need stability b/c of economic depression in 1920’s-30’s E. Euro. Nations have little experience w/ democracy.

Fascism Militant/political movement focused on loyalty to the gov. & obedience to its leader. Preached extreme nationalism Uniforms w/ certain colors & salutes, and rallies. Authoritarian leader No individual rights Total control of ppl’s lives. Ex. Education, media, & economy Believe each social class has a place & a purpose. How is fascism similar to communism? Different?

Benito Mussolini Democracy failing in Italy.
Italians in need of strong leader. Mussolini to rescue economy & gov. Founder of Fascist Party, 1919. Won support Oct. 22, 1922 Fascist marched in Rome demanding Mussolini to take over gov. King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini “Il Duce”

Except Fascism Gov. censored radio stations & publications (written text). Outlawed strikes How is the way Stalin ruled similar to Mussolini? Different?

National Socialist German Workers’ Party AKA, Nazism Sought to overturn Treaty of Versailles Known as de Fuhrer ( leader of Nazi party) Inspired by Mussolini’s march to Rome

Hitler & Nazi attempted to seize power in Munich in 1923
Hitler arrest, tried for treason, sentenced to 5 yrs, & served 9 months in prison. In prison he wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle) His autobiography In book he claimed Aryan race are the dominant race; whites w/ blue eyes & blond hair Claimed Jews, Slavs, & Gypsies were inferior

Hitler claimed Germany was too crowded & needed lebensraum Promised to conquer Eastern Euro nations & Russia to get the space.

1924, after prison Hitler revived Nazi party.
When American loans/support during economic depression stopped, ppl. began to followed him. Hitler provided sense of security & firm leadership.

Hitler later called for new elections Hitler won against communist leaders

Hitler created a totalitarian state:
Banned other political parties Had enemies arrested Created SS- Schutzstaffel, a protection squad Used Gestapo, secret police to keep citizens in line Created command economy Banned strikes & unions. Wanted to control every aspect of Germans’ lives.

Hitler targets Jews Anti-Semitism, hatred towards Jews was used was key ideology of Nazis. Used Jews as scapegoats the ppl. To blame for all the problems in Germany. 1933, Nazi passed law limiting the rights of Jews. Violence against Jews encouraged. Ex. Kristallnacht, Nov. 9, 1933, Night of the Broken Glass. Nazis attacked Jewish homes & businesses.

Following countries in Europe also fall to totalitarian or authoritarian rule Austria, Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, & Romania. Following countries maintain democracy: Britain, France, US, Scandinavian countries, & Czechoslovakia.
