2 HIV/AIDS Occurs through transfer of body fluids
Attacks white blood cells Can be symptom free for more than 10 years before turning into AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency virus) Symptoms: Fever, chills, rash, swollen glands Why is it so hard to cure HIV?

3 Rhinovirus Lytic in nature Carried in respiratory droplets Symptoms:
Nasal congestion Sore throat Muscles ache fatigued

4 Influenza Transmitted through respiratory droplets in the air
Responsible for about half a million deaths per year Symptoms: Fever, nausea, headache, runny nose, body ache, fatigue

5 Herpes Simplex Sexually transmitted virus HS1 = cold sores
HS2 = genital herpes Transmitted by contact with infected skin area Symptoms: Fever, open sores/blisters around the mouth and/or genitals

6 Ebola Transmitted through saliva and body fluids
Can stay alive on non-human surfaces for 6 hours Fatal if untreated Typically restricted to Africa Symptoms: Malaise, confusion, headaches, diarrhea, seizures, hemorrhaging from orifices All about EBOLA

7 Smallpox Has since been declared eradicated Symptoms:
-Last known case was in 1977! Has since been declared eradicated - transferred through saliva Highly contagious and deadly Symptoms: Fever, lesions filled with pus, fatigue

8 Rabies Transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal
Infects the central nervous system Causes encephalitis (swelling of the brain) Symptoms: - hallucinations, anxiety, paralysis

9 Chickenpox Airborne disease spread through coughing or sneezing
Highly contagious Symptoms: Fluid filled blisters, fever, headache

10 Polio Enters through the blood stream through fecal matter in puddles
Multiplies in the intestine and invades the nervous system Symptoms: - fever, vomiting, loss of reflexes, severe muscle spasms

11 Zika Virus Transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito
Mother’s can pass the virus to their offspring, which can cause micro-encephalitis (small brain) Symptoms: fever, rash, conjunctivitis (red eyes), joint pain
