Early Life Born near Hodgenville, Kentucky.
Came in the world on February 12, 1809. Family was poor and uneducated. Moved to Indiana at age 7.

Early Life Cont. Mother died at age 9.
Little education so he read books himself.

Mid-Life Stayed stable with manual labor work. Moved to Illinois.
Became part of state government. Became very well known for his wit and integrity. Married

Study of Law Self-studied law by borrowing books from attorney.
Got his license in 1836. Became one of the most able lawyers in Illinois.

Washington D.C. Elected into the House of Representatives in 1847.
Moved to Republican Party in 1856. Ran for Senate against Stephan A. Douglas. Lost, but gained national attention.

Washington cont. 1860, the Republicans nominate him for presidential candidate. Won the election. Cost the United States ten states due to secession. This began the Civil War.

Civil War Began with the attack on Fort Sumter.
Southern Blockade- blocking of southern ports for trade. Emancipation Proclamation- announcement of free slaves.

Civil War Cont. Gettysburg Address
Led the war, but kept his loyalty to what he campaigned on.

Assassination While attending a theatre he was assassinated.
His death was a terrible thing as it killed a man of great deeds.

Legacy Kept a nation intact during a Civil War.
Freed slaves and made the nation into a stronger one.
