Chemistry Stuff!!!
2
Matter is stuff Matter is anything with mass and volume like:
3
Atoms are the smallest (easily undividable) pieces of matter.
The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus (center) of the atom. Atoms consist of three main parts: Protons are positive (+) And very big compared to electrons Neutrons are neutral (They have [0] no charge) And are very big compared to electrons Electrons are negative (-) And are tiny compared to protons and neutrons
4
Elements Different types of atoms are called elements.
Gold is made of atoms with 79 protons Copper is made of atoms with 29 protons
5
Electrons are negative!!!
How do I find out how many protons and electrons these different elements have? Check out the atomic number!!! What’s the atomic number for oxygen? 8 So how many protons does an oxygen atom have? And how many electrons does an oxygen atom have? Protons are positive!!! Electrons are negative!!!
6
So what about silver? What’s silver’s atomic number? 47
How many protons does it have? How many electrons does it have?
7
What’s it called when atoms combine?
A molecule is made of two or more atoms combined together. Some popular molecules are: Oxygen (O2) Nitrogen (N2) Water (H2O) What’s that number mean?
8
What’s a compound then? A compound is made of two or more DIFFERENT types of atoms combined. Some righteous compounds are: H2O H2O2 CO2 C6H12O6 What did those numbers mean?
9
Hmmm…So what is the difference between a molecule and a compound?
A molecule is two or more atoms combined. A compound is two or more different atoms combined. Try this: Substance Molecule? Compound? H2O O2 CH4 (methane) C3H8 (propane) Fe2O3 (rust)
