Knowledge Claims Knowledge claims
As defined by IBO: knowledge claims are claims about knowledge. So, since that is little more than a balanced sentence, let us explore further:

Types of Knowledge Claims
1.Statements of personal observation What we acquire through our senses These can be checked Personal experience I know its cold in here

#2. 2. Statements of value/value judgments
Qualitative and subjective Of value/meaning/significance to the observer(s). Cannot be proven true or false. Opinions/persona I know the Cowboys are the best football team I know enchiladas are delicious

Predictions Based on statements of observation but are not observations Follow general patterns established from past to future Expectation is the repeated outcome will occur I know I will die some day I know the weather will be hot tomorrow I know my dog will bark at me if I don’t take him for a run

Based on statements of observation but are not observations Places two actions in causal connection; if...then. If I don’t care about TOK and think it’s a blow-off class then I will fail If I quit my job then I will need to find another one If I drink green juice for two weeks then I will lose 15 Lbs

Activity Cut a piece of paper into 6 pieces
On each one write one knowledge claim without identifying its category Cover at least 3 categories you can repeat categories

Activity Work in pairs Exchange papers
Identify the category of your partners claims while they do the same to yours If you do not agree wait until everyone has finished and submit your disagreement to them for further judgement

Each group has a deck of cards face down on the desk Pull out a card =15 seconds to come up with a claim Spade= Definition Club= Observation Heart= Value Claim Diamond= Metaphysical Claim If other groups don’t think it is a valid claim you do not get points
