1 Metamorphic Rocks

2 Metamorphic Rock Rock that has been changed (metamorphosed) into a different rock type, without actually melting, by an increase in temperature and/or pressure, and/or the action of chemical fluids.

3 How does the temperature increase?
The temperature increases either from being buried deeper into the earth or if the surrounding rock is heated. Rocks can get moved along faults. Faults – A fracture or fracture zone of rock, along which rock masses have moved relative to one another parallel to the fracture.

4 Deformation in Metamorphism
Regional Metamorphism – a general term for metamorphism affecting an extensive region. Rock can become extremely deformed during metamorphism. When plates collide, it can cause extreme change in the rock around the boundary, thus the changes.

5 The original rock Protolith – the original rock that metamorphic rocks are formed from. Either the igneous rock or sedimentary rock that it used to be.
