How Yellowknife got its name
The name Yellowknife comes from the copper-wielding Chipewyan tribe which fought the Dene for many years. They actually used copper knives, that were sort of a yellow color. Now that is cool!

Interesting Facts Yellowknife did not have organized gold mining until the mid-1930’s. By 1942 it had a population of 1000 people. By 1967 Yellowknife was the capital city of the Northwest Territories. Hunting, trapping, and fishing still dominate the local economy.
