Quick Write: While it is good to be proud of your accomplishments, what are the consequences of having too much pride? Describe people you know who are arrogant and “full of themselves.” How do they act, and how do others react to them? Describe your feelings about spiders. What do you know about them? What are positive and negative aspects of spiders.

What do you know about the Greek goddess Athena?
Called “Minerva” by the Romans Greek God of wisdom, arts, weaving and war. What is a Myth again? A story from the past involving gods or heroes. These stories often explain beliefs, customs, or mysterious natural phenomena or identify acceptable and unacceptable behaviors.

As we read “Arachne” together:
Highlight adjectives (words that describe a noun or pronoun) and other descriptive language that creates visual details. Use the highlighted details to visualize the story. Sketch the visual along the side in “My Notes.” Stop at the bottom of page 74. In “My Notes” predict what will happen next? Continue reading the rest of the story.

Arachne Rewrite the story in today’s society, while maintaining the basic idea. For example: a boy who thinks he is a better basketball player than LeBron James. Remember: the character still needs to transform into something else (an animal, an insect, or an object) related to his or her skill.

Revising: In writing groups, share your writing piece. Other group members will listen and provide feedback. Take the feedback from the group members to independently make revisions. Remember what you have learned about revising the beginning, middle, and end.
