2. Causes of Non-communicable Diseases
Communicable diseases are caused by the spread of pathogens.
Noncommunicable diseases are diseases that are not transmitted by pathogens.
Many noncommunicable diseases are:
Chronic diseases.
Degenerative diseases.

3. Ways People Get Non-communicable Diseases
Diseases present at birth
Lifestyle Behaviors and Disease
- (age, heredity, gender, ethnic group are uncontrollable risk factors)
- using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs
Environment – secondhand smoke, radon, chemical waste, carbon monoxide, and chemical products.

Allergies
Alzheimer’s Disease
Arthritis
Asthma
Cancer
Cardiovascular Disease
Cerebral Palsy
Diabetes
Multiple Sclerosis
Muscular Dystrophy
Sickle cell disease

5. Cancer
Cancer is a disease characterized by the rapid and uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. It can affect people of any age.
These cells can develop tumors: a mass of abnormal cells.
There are two kinds of tumors:
Benign tumor – tumor that is not cancerous
Malignant tumor – tumor that is cancerous

6. Types of Cancer Cancer can develop in many parts of the body.
Skin cancer
Breast cancer
Lung cancer (caused by smoking)
Cancers of the reproductive organs
Lymphoma (cancer of lymph nodes)
Colon and rectum (colorectal) cancer
Leukemia (cancer of white blood cells in bone marrow)

7. Warning Signs of Cancer
Change in bowel or bladder habits
A sore that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere
Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
Obvious change in mole or wart
Nagging cough or hoarseness

8. Skin Cancer - ABCDs of Melanoma
Asymmetry One half doesn’t match the other half.
Border The border is irregular—edges are ragged or blurred.
Color The color is not uniform and may contain shades of brown or black and possibly patches of red, white, or blue.
Diameter The diameter is larger than the size of a pencil eraser (6 mm) or is getting bigger.

9. Treatments There is no cure for cancer. Treatments include: Surgery
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy
Immunotherapy
Hormone therapy
