3 Common vs. Proper Nouns Common Noun: a non-specific person, place, thing, or idea Proper Noun: the name of a specific person, place, book, movie, TV character, etc. (CAPITALIZE) Common Noun Proper Noun writer Edgar Allen Poe singer Taylor Swift city San Francisco movie Ender’s Game book Harry Potter television character Sheldon Cooper state Utah

4 Common Vs. Proper Nouns Write down all the nouns in each sentence. Underline the proper nouns. 1. In the story, a prince and a pauper changed clothing. 2. New York and Los Angeles are the largest cities in the United States. 3. Do you remember the story about Scrooge and Tiny Tim? 4. The shilling was a silver coin used in England. 5. In the United States, hail causes more damage than tornadoes do.

7 Possessive Nouns Singular Nouns: need an ‘s at the end. Singular Example: country  country’s Plural Nouns: need an ‘ after the s at the end. Example: teachers  teachers’ If the word is plural WITHOUT an s on the end, add an ‘s. Example: men  men’s

8 Possessive Nouns Complete each sentence with the possessive form of the word in parentheses. 16. (baby) Are the __________ hands cold? 17. (elephants) There were seats on the __________ backs. 18.
