1 Stock Market Project Shane Coombe Period 9

2 Background Thanks to good old uncle Manny I now have $5,000 to spend on whatever I would like. Being the wise student that I am I listened to my good old Econ teacher Mr. Ulicney and I decided to invest all of my money in stocks. It was a tough decision on which companies to invest in but after a few days of consultation with Mr. Lapotsky, with his abundant knowledge, I was able to choose just a few possible good companies to put my money in.

3 CNH Global NV (CNH) CNH Global NV is a company that specializes in the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of both agricultural and construction equipment world wide. I decided this company would be good to invest in because I could learn how the company I work for is doing financially. Also I wanted to cover a wide variety of industries and economic sectors, this company is an industrial manufacturer.

5 Valero Energy Corporation (VLO)
Valero Energy Corporation is a company that operates as a crude oil refining and marketing company in the United States as well as global. I chose this company because over the last few years a few Valero gas stations moved into the area. Also gas prices have been going up as of late so this seemed to be a logical stock to choose.

6 Valero (Continued) Opening price per share (August 31, 2007): $69.32
Original money invested in company: $970.48 Shares bought in the company: 14 Closing price per share (May 16, 2008): $48.43 Gain/Loss per stock: -$20.89 Total Gain/Loss in company: -$292.46 Monthly price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008) Chart of Price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008)

7 Massey Energy Company (MEE)
The Massey Energy Company produces, processes, and sells bituminous coal. I chose this company because everyone always needs some form of energy to survive everyday life. Out of all the possible energy suppliers this company seemed most appealing to me.

8 Massey Energy (Ctd) Opening price per share (August 31, 2007): $20.25
Original money invested in company: $1,012.50 Shares bought in the company: 50 Closing price per share (May 16, 2008): $64.52 Gain/Loss per stock: $44.27 Total Gain/Loss in company: $2,213.50 Monthly price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008) Chart of Price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008)

9 Digi International Inc. (DGII)
Digi International is a company that operates as a device networking company and develops various products and technologies to connect and manage local or remote electronic devices over a network. I chose this company because I recently read an article online about Digi and it seemed like a business with possible growth. Also I wanted to pick a com- munication or technological company because there are always new innovations and technological advances.

10 Digi (Continued) Opening price per share (August 31, 2007): $14.22
Original money invested in company: $995.40 Shares bought in the company: 70 Closing price per share (May 16, 2008): $8.82 Gain/Loss per stock: -$5.40 Total Gain/Loss in company: -$378.00 Monthly price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008) Chart of Price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008)

11 The Walt Disney Company (DIS)
The Walt Disney Company is a diversified entertainment company that operates worldwide. As a kid I always was watching the Disney channel or watching a Disney movie, so I figured the company is always growing because almost every kid wants to go to Disneyworld or watch a Disney movie. Also as Disneyworld always seems to be expanding and growing in size as well as its television network expansion the company as a whole must also be growing producing profits.

12 Disney (Continued) Opening price per share (August 31, 2007): $33.74
Original money invested in company: $1,012.20 Shares bought in the company: 30 Closing price per share (May 16, 2008): $34.91 Gain/Loss per stock: $1.17 Total Gain/Loss in company: $35.10 Monthly price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008) Chart of Price per share (August 31, May 16, 2008)

14 Company Comparison

15 Summary My best choice I made was in the energy company.
I was able to make $44.27 on every share I had in the company. Although most of my stocks went up and down many ended up losing me money in the long run. Even though I made mostly bad investment choices my good investments made up for them. Overall I was able to make a grand total of $1, This project allowed me to investigate with the stock market and how beneficial it may be if you invest wisely. Some companies may raise or lower their stocks based on the time of year or if their products are in season or not.
